Some interesting facts about your city (blogged by HER Realtors).
There is supposed evidence that European settlers arrived as early as 1790, and in 1805 a man named Jesse Wilson started an orchard on a farm around the area. Many Springboro residents believe Wilson was folklore legend “Johnny Appleseed”.
Springboro was founded in 1815 by Jonathan Wright of Pennsylvania. He named the city after the numerous underground springs found in the area.
Over the years, Springboro has maintained and preserved its history. Several historical structures are still standing and being managed by the city of Springboro. For example, Jonathan Wright's brick home on State Street still stands and serves as a bed and breakfast. The bed and breakfast is a commemoration of the founder and has gone through many structural changes over the years.
The Wright House is the oldest home in Springboro and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a well-documented Underground Railroad site. This site is one of the most authentic slave hiding places in the state of Ohio.
Numerous other landmarks played significant roles along the Underground Railroad. The city of Springboro provided more safe houses than any other place in Ohio during the peak of the slavery era. Self-guided tours are highly recommended in the city’s downtown historic district. Springboro is also famous for the special sparkle it has during the holiday seasons. The city boasts the largest 3-day holiday festival in the state which includes food, music, Christmas storytelling, and a Christmas-themed parade.
Our nonprofit, "Friends of Sycamore Trails", was started years ago by Raymond "Ray" Woodard, who still resides here today. He was named the financial caretaker and maintained the entryway with help from neighbors like you until after 80 years of age. At which time, Diane Zimmaro was gracious enough to contact Ray and volunteered to take over.
Diane served as the entrance and financial caretaker for over seven years! During her time she organized the front entryway mowing, mulching, trimming, edging, fertilizing, planting, and tree root feeding. She has balanced books and paid invoices. Gathered marvelous volunteers and with the help of these amazing neighbors, has typed, printed, stuffed, labeled, and mailed newsletters to each of you. She even formed a group of Watering Warriors to help keep plants growing. Special thank to Diane's amazing husband, Sam, for all of his love and support for Diane while volunteering her time and hard work.
In 2021, Diane bestowed her hard work to your new Co-Directors, Steve & Jamie Taylor. Steve and Jamie are parents to six teens and love to have fun. They hope to make some seamless changes and get more community involvement. With hard work, they believe they will be able to expand what we have to offer in our neighborhood to benefit all our residents.
